5 Tips to Protect Your Home Against Water Damage

2/14/2024 (Permalink)

Large water stain on a ceiling. Implementing these DIY tips can significantly reduce the risk of water damage to your home.

Water damage is a common yet often preventable issue that can wreak havoc on your home. Whether it's a leaky roof, burst pipes, or natural disasters, taking proactive measures can significantly reduce the risk of water damage. In this blog, we'll explore five practical do-it-yourself tips to protect your home from potential water-related disasters.

1. Regular Inspection and Maintenance of Plumbing

Regularly inspecting your plumbing system can help catch potential issues before they turn into major problems. Check for leaks, drips, or signs of corrosion in pipes, faucets, and fixtures. Replace worn-out hoses and ensure proper sealing to prevent water seepage.

2. Maintain Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged gutters and downspouts can lead to water overflow and seepage into your home's foundation or walls. Clean gutters regularly, especially during fall when leaves accumulate, to ensure proper water drainage away from your home. Consider installing gutter guards to prevent debris buildup.

3. Seal and Protect Windows and Doors

Check for gaps or cracks around windows and doors that could allow water infiltration during heavy rains or storms. Seal any openings with weather-stripping or caulking to prevent water from entering your home and causing damage.

4. Maintain Your Roof

Regularly inspect your roof for damaged or missing shingles, cracks, or areas prone to leaks. Repair any issues promptly to prevent water from seeping into your home during rain or snow. Consider professional inspection and maintenance annually, especially after severe weather events.

5. Monitor and Maintain Your Landscape

Properly grade your yard to ensure water flows away from your home's foundation. Avoid landscaping that encourages water pooling near the house. Install proper drainage systems, such as French drains, to divert water away from the property.

Implementing these DIY tips can significantly reduce the risk of water damage to your home. However, it's essential to stay vigilant and address any issues promptly to prevent potential water-related disasters. While these measures are effective, some situations may require professional expertise.

Understanding the Basics

Mold is a common issue that can affect homes in Commerce City, CO, due to our climate and environmental factors. When facing a mold problem, it's crucial to understand the distinctions between mold removal and mold remediation.

Mold Removal

Mold removal often refers to the physical process of eliminating visible mold from surfaces. While it might seem like a straightforward solution, it's essential to note that it may not address the underlying issue causing mold growth.

Pros of Mold Removal

  • Immediate removal of visible mold.
  • May improve the appearance of affected areas.

Cons of Mold Removal

  • Does not address the root cause of mold.
  • Mold can return if the moisture source isn't addressed.

Mold Remediation

Mold remediation takes a more comprehensive approach. It not only involves removing visible mold but also addressing the underlying causes of mold growth, such as moisture issues and humidity control. This holistic approach helps prevent future mold problems.

Pros of Mold Remediation

  • A comprehensive solution that addresses the root causes.
  • Minimizes the risk of mold returning.

Cons of Mold Remediation

  • May take longer to complete compared to simple removal.

Choosing the Right Approach

Here in Colorado, we are no stranger to heavy snowfalls, thunderstorms, and flooding, making water damage a significant concern for homeowners and businesses alike. In this blog, we'll guide you through the steps to ensure your indoor air quality remains safe and healthy post-water damage.

Understanding the Importance of Indoor Air Quality

Colorado residents understand that clean air is a vital component of a healthy living environment, especially in a state known for its pristine natural landscapes. After water damage occurs in your home or business, it's crucial to address not only visible damage but also the potential threats to indoor air quality. Stagnant water and moisture can lead to mold growth, which can release harmful contaminants.

Step 1: Ensure Safety First

Before diving into the restoration process, prioritize safety. Ensure the property is safe to enter and check for any electrical hazards or structural damage. Use proper protective gear, including masks, gloves, and eye protection, when dealing with water-damaged areas.

Step 2: Remove Standing Water and Moisture

The first step in restoring indoor air quality is to eliminate all sources of moisture. Use pumps, wet/dry vacuums, and dehumidifiers to remove standing water and excess moisture from affected areas. Speedy moisture removal is essential in preventing mold growth.

Step 3: Inspect and Remediate Mold

In Colorado's diverse climate, mold can grow quickly if left unchecked. Inspect your property for visible mold growth and address it promptly. SERVPRO professionals are well-equipped to handle mold remediation safely and effectively.

Step 4: Clean and Disinfect

Cleaning Up Debris After Colorado Storms

9/16/2023 (Permalink)

Colorado's breathtaking landscapes are a wonder to behold, but the state's ever-changing weather can bring powerful storms that leave a trail of debris and fallen trees in their wake. As a responsible homeowner in the Colorado area, knowing how to effectively clean up after storms is essential to ensure the safety of your property and loved ones. In this comprehensive guide, we'll provide you with valuable insights and actionable tips on cleaning up debris and fallen trees after Colorado storms, helping you restore your home's beauty and security.

Assessing the Damage: Safety First

Before diving into the cleanup process, prioritize safety for yourself and others. Inspect your property carefully to identify potential hazards, such as downed power lines or unstable structures. If you encounter any life-threatening situations, evacuate the area immediately and contact the relevant authorities.

Dealing with Fallen Trees

Fallen trees can cause significant damage to structures, vehicles, and landscapes. Here's how to manage fallen trees safely and efficiently:

Secure the Area: Mark off the area around the fallen tree to prevent anyone from getting too close. If the tree has damaged power lines, stay at a safe distance and contact the utility company.

Assess the Damage: Determine the extent of the tree's impact on your property. If it has caused structural damage, consult a professional before attempting removal.

DIY vs. Professional Help: Small trees or branches can often be handled with DIY methods, but larger trees and complex removals require professional expertise. An arborist can assess the situation and safely remove the tree if necessary.

Clearing Debris

After a storm, your property may be littered with debris, such as branches, leaves, and other items. Proper debris removal is essential to prevent further damage and maintain your property's aesthetics:

Safety Gear: Wear appropriate protective gear, such as gloves, sturdy footwear, and eye protection, when handling debris.

Sorting and Disposal: Separate debris into different categories, such as organic material, recyclables, and non-recyclables. Compost or dispose of organic material properly, and recycle whenever possible.

Composting: Consider composting branches and leaves to create nutrient-rich soil for your garden. Avoid composting diseased or infested plant material.

Bulky Items: If you have large, bulky items like broken furniture, contact your local waste management service for guidance on proper disposal methods.

Yard Cleanup: Restoring Your Landscape

Your yard might require some extra attention to restore its beauty and functionality:

Pruning: Trim damaged branches and shrubs to encourage healthy growth and prevent further damage.

Plant Replacement: If any plants or trees were uprooted, replace them with native species that are well-suited to Colorado's climate.

Mulching: Apply mulch to your garden beds to retain moisture and control weed growth.

Lawn Care: Rake your lawn to remove debris and allow sunlight to reach the grass. Reseed or re-sod any damaged areas.

Preventing Future Damage

After cleaning up storm debris, take proactive measures to reduce the impact of future storms:

Regular Tree Maintenance: Trim and prune trees on a regular basis to reduce the risk of limbs breaking during storms.

Secure Outdoor Items: Anchor outdoor furniture, playsets, and other items that could become projectiles in strong winds.

Gutter Maintenance: Keep gutters and downspouts clear of debris to prevent water buildup and potential flooding.

Cleaning up debris and fallen trees after storms is a necessary task that ensures your property's safety, aesthetics, and functionality. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you'll be better equipped to handle post-storm cleanup and restoration. Remember that safety always comes first, and when in doubt, don't hesitate to seek professional assistance. With your diligence and proactive approach, you'll be well-prepared to weather any storm that comes your way.

How Fire Sprinklers Detect and Combat Fires

8/14/2023 (Permalink)

As a homeowner or property owner, ensuring the safety of your family, tenants, and assets is of utmost importance. Fire accidents can occur unexpectedly, and having an effective fire protection system in place is crucial to mitigate potential damage and save lives. Fire sprinkler systems are a vital component of fire safety, offering a quick and automatic response to combat fires before they escalate. In this blog, we will explore how fire sprinklers detect fires and the mechanisms they employ to combat flames swiftly and effectively.

1. Heat-Activated Sensing

Fire sprinkler systems operate on a heat-activated principle. Each individual sprinkler head is equipped with a heat-sensitive element, typically a glass bulb or metal link, containing a liquid or a substance that expands with heat. These elements are carefully calibrated to respond to specific temperature thresholds.

2. Responding to Localized Heat

Contrary to popular belief, fire sprinkler heads don't activate all at once when a fire breaks out. Instead, they are designed to respond to localized heat. When a fire occurs, the air temperature surrounding the fire rises rapidly, reaching the activation temperature of the heat-sensitive element in the nearest sprinkler head.

3. Individual Activation

Only the sprinkler head closest to the fire is activated due to the localized increase in heat. This targeted response ensures that water is directed precisely where it is needed, minimizing water wastage and maximizing the efficiency of the system.

4. Discharging Water Flow

Once the heat-sensitive element reaches its activation temperature, it triggers a mechanical response. In the case of a glass bulb, it shatters, while a metal link detaches. This action opens a valve, allowing water to flow through the activated sprinkler head.

5. Water Pressure and Spray Pattern

Fire sprinklers are designed to discharge water at a specific pressure and spray pattern. The pressure is optimized to effectively combat the fire while preventing excessive water damage to the surrounding area. The spray pattern is carefully engineered to cover the maximum surface area, extinguishing flames and reducing heat.

6. Controlling Fire Spread

By swiftly delivering water directly to the source of the fire, fire sprinklers play a critical role in controlling fire spread. Their rapid response can suppress or extinguish flames before they have a chance to grow and threaten lives and property.

7. Heat Absorption and Cooling Effect

In addition to quenching flames, fire sprinklers help cool down the surrounding environment, making it less conducive to the fire's spread. This cooling effect is particularly important in preventing re-ignition.

8. Buying Time for Evacuation

The quick response of fire sprinklers provides valuable time for occupants to evacuate safely. Early fire suppression can significantly reduce the intensity of the fire, giving occupants crucial minutes to exit the building and reach safety.

Fire sprinkler systems are a powerful and efficient line of defense against fire emergencies. Their heat-activated mechanism ensures a quick response, containing fires at their inception and preventing catastrophic damage. As a homeowner or property owner, investing in a well-maintained fire sprinkler system can give you peace of mind and, more importantly, protect the lives and well-being of your loved ones or tenants. Remember, regular maintenance and inspections of the sprinkler system are vital to ensuring its optimal performance and reliability in times of need.

Is a Basement Flood Usually Covered by Insurance?

7/18/2023 (Permalink)

A basement flood can be a stressful and costly experience for homeowners. One of the common questions that arise in such situations is whether insurance will cover the damages and restoration expenses. In this blog, we will delve into the topic of basement floods and insurance coverage, providing you with essential information to help you navigate the claims process and understand the factors that determine coverage.

Review Your Policy

The first step in determining if a basement flood is covered by insurance is to carefully review your homeowner's insurance policy. Look for specific provisions related to water damage, flooding, and basement coverage. Policies can vary, so it's crucial to understand the terms and conditions outlined in your policy.

Types of Insurance Coverage

There are two primary types of insurance coverage that come into play when it comes to basement floods:

1. Standard Homeowner's Insurance

Standard homeowner's insurance typically covers water damage resulting from sudden and accidental incidents, such as a burst pipe or a malfunctioning water heater. However, it may not cover flood-related damages caused by external factors, such as heavy rain or rising groundwater.

2. Flood Insurance

Flood insurance is a separate policy specifically designed to cover damages caused by floods. It is essential to note that flood insurance is distinct from standard homeowner's insurance and must be purchased separately. Flood insurance is typically offered through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private insurers.

Factors That Influence Coverage

Cause of the Basement Flood

The cause of the basement flood plays a significant role in determining insurance coverage. If the flood is a result of a covered peril, such as a broken pipe, your homeowner's insurance policy may provide coverage. However, if the flood is caused by a natural disaster or a flood event, you would need separate flood insurance for coverage.

Policy Exclusions and Limitations

Insurance policies may have specific exclusions and limitations for basement floods. For example, some policies may exclude coverage for floods caused by sewer backups or water seepage through foundation cracks. Understanding these exclusions is crucial for managing expectations and exploring additional coverage options.

Location and Flood Zone

The location of your property and its classification within a designated flood zone can also impact coverage. Properties located in high-risk flood zones may require mandatory flood insurance. However, even if your property is not in a high-risk zone, it's important to assess the flood risk in your area and consider the benefits of purchasing flood insurance.

Navigating the Claims Process

Document the Damage

In the event of a basement flood, it is essential to document the damages thoroughly. Take photographs or videos of the affected areas and keep a detailed inventory of damaged items. This documentation will help support your insurance claim.

Contact Your Insurance Provider

Notify your insurance provider as soon as possible to report the basement flood. They will guide you through the claims process, provide necessary forms, and explain the coverage and deductible associated with your policy.

Work with Restoration Professionals

Engage the services of a reputable disaster restoration company experienced in handling basement flood cleanup and restoration. They can assess the damages, provide the necessary documentation for your insurance claim, and carry out the restoration process efficiently.

Determining whether a basement flood is covered by insurance can be complex, and coverage depends on various factors, including the cause of the flood, policy provisions, and location. It is crucial to carefully review your homeowner's insurance policy, consider purchasing flood insurance if necessary, and document the damages to support your claim. Consulting with your insurance provider and working with experienced restoration professionals will help you navigate the claims process and restore your basement effectively.

Mold Remediation: How to Address Mold Damage After a Flood

6/21/2023 (Permalink)

Mold is a common problem that can occur after a flooding disaster. It can cause damage to your property and create an unpleasant and musty odor. If left unaddressed, it can also lead to structural damage and decrease the value of your property. In this blog, we'll explore the steps you can take to address mold damage after a flooding disaster.

Identify the problem

The first step in addressing mold damage is to identify the extent of the problem. Mold can grow in hidden areas, such as behind walls and under flooring, so it's important to conduct a thorough inspection of your property. Look for visible signs of mold growth, such as discoloration and musty odors, and pay special attention to areas that were affected by the flooding.

Remove the mold

Once you've identified the extent of the mold damage, the next step is to remove the mold. This can be a challenging process, especially if the mold growth is extensive. In general, it's best to hire a professional mold remediation company to handle the removal process. They have the experience and equipment necessary to safely and effectively remove the mold from your property.

Prevent from future mold growth

During the mold removal process, it's important to take steps to prevent the mold from spreading. This can include sealing off the affected area and using negative air pressure to prevent mold spores from spreading to other areas of your property. In addition, it's important to wear protective gear, such as gloves and respirators, to prevent exposure to mold spores.

Underlying issue

After the mold has been removed, it's important to address the underlying cause of the mold growth. In many cases, this is related to moisture, so it's important to address any sources of moisture in your property. This can include repairing leaks and improving ventilation to promote air flow and reduce humidity levels.

Finally, it's important to take steps to prevent future mold growth. This can include regular inspections of your property to identify and address any signs of mold growth, as well as maintaining proper ventilation and humidity levels to prevent moisture buildup.

In conclusion, mold damage is a common problem that can occur after a flooding disaster. To address mold damage, it's important to identify the extent of the problem, remove the mold, address the underlying cause of the mold growth, and take steps to prevent future mold growth. If you're experiencing mold damage after a flooding disaster, it's best to consult with a professional mold remediation company to ensure that the problem is properly addressed and resolved.

Identifying Mold Growth in Commercial Buildings: Common Places to Look Out For

5/15/2023 (Permalink)

As a disaster restoration company, we often receive calls about mold growth in commercial buildings. Mold can cause structural damage, so it's essential to identify and address mold growth promptly. In this blog, we'll discuss the common places to find mold in a commercial building, so you know where to look out for it.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are one of the most common places to find mold in commercial buildings. The high humidity and moisture from sinks, showers, and toilets create a perfect environment for mold growth. Mold can grow on the walls, ceilings, floors, and grout of the bathroom. If you see discoloration or stains on these surfaces, it may be mold growth.

HVAC System

The HVAC system in a commercial building can be a breeding ground for mold. Mold can grow in the air ducts, evaporator coils, and drip pans of the HVAC system. If the HVAC system is not properly maintained, mold spores can spread throughout the building, causing hazards and structural damage.

Roof and Ceiling

A leaking roof or damaged ceiling can lead to moisture buildup, which can cause mold growth. If you see discoloration or stains on the ceiling, it may be an indication of mold growth. In addition, mold can grow in the insulation and walls surrounding the roof and ceiling.

Basement and Crawlspace

Basements and crawlspaces are often damp and humid, which makes them an ideal environment for mold growth. Mold can grow on the walls, floors, and ceilings of these areas. If there are any leaks or water damage, it can lead to mold growth. It's essential to monitor the humidity levels in these areas and address any water damage promptly.

Kitchens

Kitchens can be a hotbed for mold growth, especially if there are plumbing issues or leaks. Mold can grow on the walls, ceiling, floors, and cabinets of the kitchen. It's essential to monitor the plumbing system and address any leaks or water damage promptly to prevent mold growth.

In conclusion, mold growth can be a serious issue in commercial buildings. Bathrooms, HVAC systems, roofs and ceilings, basements and crawlspaces, and kitchens are some of the common places to find mold in a commercial building. If you suspect mold growth in your commercial building, it's essential to consult a professional disaster restoration company, such as our SERVPRO of Commerce City team. They can assess the extent of the damage and recommend the appropriate course of action to address mold growth safely and effectively.

Storm clouds are coming...

9/19/2022 (Permalink)

snow fall on branches with a building in the background Winter storms are coming...

Obviously, as a homeowner your focus will be on returning your home to normal as quickly as possible after the storm.

Unfortunately, some of the damage caused by storms may be more complex than you realized and restoring your home could take time.

It’s important to understand the kinds of damage that storms may cause and what you can do to clean up afterward so that you can keep your home safe and sound and avoid long term damage.

It can be stressful enough dealing with the aftermath of a storm…the last thing you want is to leave your home open to further issues.

What Kind of Damage Can Storms Cause?

Storms can bring a wide range of severe issues, from damaging winds to heavy snowfall to flooding, all of which have the potential to adversely affect your home.

If your home already has issues, such as loose roof shingles, cracked foundations or other structural damage, it will be even more vulnerable to the kind of damage caused by storms.

In Denver, winter activities are a cherished part of life but winter weather can bring its own unique challenges.

Heavy snowfall can bring down branches and trees, damage roofs and contribute to flooding when it begins to melt.

Ice dams that build up in and around gutters can lead to leaks, which in turn can result in mold infestations.

Once water penetrates your home, it can cause severe damage to interior structures and belongings.

There is no doubt that storms can be severe and as a homeowner it’s up to you to do everything you can to mitigate storm related damage in order to keep your home safe.

We can help.

What Is Water Damage Insurance And How Much Does It Cost

9/9/2022 (Permalink)

water damaged floor with category 2 written across photo We can handle any type of water damage.

Water damage coverage can be a complicated issue, but it is also one of the most important parts of any homeowners’ insurance policy.  When you consider that every year one in 50 homeowners will file a water damage claim, you can begin to understand why having the best possible coverage is so important.

So while everyone can agree that it is crucial for every homeowner to have some sort of coverage for water damage, the intricate part of the equation is determining exactly what a specific policy covers and how much is water damage insurance.  Costs can vary drastically from one company to another and depending on what specific type of coverage you opt to carry.

So what is water damage coverage on homeowners insurance?

In general, most homeowners’ policies cover damage that is considered “sudden and accidental”. This can include burst pipes, accidental leaks and water damage after a fire. This doesn’t include damage from floods or other natural disasters, however, which will require separate coverage.

Damage that occurs through neglect or from intentional acts like turning your water off for the winter will not be covered.  Even in the case of damage that is covered if your insurance company believes that the damage was made worse because you didn’t act quickly enough to mitigate it, they may refuse to cover it or cut back on the amount they pay out.

According to Forbes, the average cost of a water damage claim is $10,900  and with so many claims being filed each year, it’s easy to see why your insurance company might be hesitant to provide full payment on every claim. So the more you can do to help your case, the better your chances of getting significant reimbursement.

Once we have all of the details, we’ll be able to draw up a complete plan of action to cover all of your specific needs.

We’ll also identify any items that we feel cannot be salvaged so that you can make the final decision about how to handle them and have all the information you need to file an insurance claim.

With a crew on site, we’ll begin by boarding up windows and covering roof damage with tarps in order to prevent any further damage and mitigate your expenses.

Next we’ll remove standing water and any other hazardous debris and then utilize our state-of-the-art equipment and professional training to thoroughly dry and clean all affected surfaces.

Since we also know that water damage can easily lead to mold infestation, we’ll also perform full mold remediation to ensure that your property is safe for you, your employees and your customers.

Because our end goal is to make your business whole again, our services for commercial properties also include replacing drywall, removing and replacing carpeting and carpet pads and replacing damaged flooring.

We’ll even make recommendations for specialized services that are beyond our scope, such as roof repair, restoration of furniture, electronics and other items, preservation of important business documents and tree removal.

First and foremost, we understand the need to move quickly so that you can get your business operating again and cut your losses. We don’t want your business to be shut down for a moment longer than necessary so we’ll do everything we can to get you on your feet again soon.

Water Damage Restoration From A storm That Denver Can Trust

Is there a source for water damage restoration near me? That’s a question that many property owners find themselves asking when a pipe bursts or a sudden storm causes flooding. Water damage can occur at a moment’s notice and even the smallest amount of water can end up taking a huge toll, both emotionally and financially, so it is not something you can afford to take lightly.

The longer water is allowed to remain standing, the more damage it can cause. Not only can surfaces be damaged, but underlying structures can also be affected as water seeps in through cracks and crevices. Worse still, standing water can quickly lead to a serious and dangerous mold infestation if it isn’t addressed right away. Since mold can cause significant health problems, that’s not a chance you want to take.

For water damage restoration you can trust, call SERVPRO and we’ll make it look “Like it never even  happened”.

Smoke Removal

7/23/2022 (Permalink)

flames in a room with boxes of office documents Fire and smoke is dangerous. Let us help.

Smoke Taking Over?

Smoke from a fire can be a nasty problem, and one that won’t easily go away. If you’ve ever found yourself coughing or gagging or opening windows to try and get rid of that stale smoke smell, then you know exactly how bad it can be. Unfortunately, smoke removal isn’t always as easy as simply opening up windows and doors and letting the fresh air in.

The problem with smoke is that it tends to cling to surfaces, especially fabrics and upholstery. Once that smell works its way into fibers it can be nearly impossible to completely remove it. For individuals with respiratory problems, that lingering smell can be a serious health issue. Even the leftover remnants of smoke can trigger asthma attacks, wheezing, and severe discomfort.

Let The Pros Clear The Air

It can be nearly impossible to remove every trace of smoke from your property by yourself. No matter how thoroughly you clean, it still may not be enough.

For thorough smoke removal that you can trust, you need to rely on a professional clean up and remediation company. Here in the Denver area, SERVPRO is the first name in restoration and remediation. We’re ready to respond faster to any disaster and we’ll stay on the job until everything is completely cleaned.

For removing smoke, that includes performing a complete walk through and assessment of the damage and using our expert training and techniques to clean and sanitize all surfaces.

We employ industrial grade equipment including vacuums and air purifiers with HEPA filters so that all smoke particles are removed from both surfaces and the air itself.

Don’t let smoke become an unwanted guest in your home. Call the professionals at SERVPRO and let us clear the air so that you can breathe easier.

What Type Of Water Damage Is Covered By Insurance?

6/3/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage is one of the most common types of homeowner insurance claims, with statistics showing that as recently as 2017, insurance payouts for water damage totaled more than $13 billion. (www.insurancebusinessmag.com/us/news/breaking-news/study-water-damage-claims-surging-161741.aspx).

Despite the common occurrence of water damage, many homeowners are unaware of the fact that insurance companies don’t cover every specific type of damage.

In fact, there are certain general rules of thumb that govern what water damage is covered by insurance.

Being aware of these rules before you purchase coverage can help you save money in the long run.

What Is Covered

According to the Insurance Information Institute, most homeowners’ policies cover damage caused by sudden or accidental sources. (www.iii.org/article/how-protect-your-home-water-damage).

That can include any of the following:

  • Burst pipes caused by cold weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Accidental leaks, such as those caused by broken appliances.
  • Water damage after a fire, whether it is from the sprinkler system or firefighters’ hoses.
  • Water damage from a roof leak is caused by accidental means like a tree falling on your roof during a storm.
  • Wind-driven damage from storms such as heavy rain or hail.

What Isn’t Covered

  • Water damage from neglect or lack of maintenance, including failure to fix plumbing problems, repair roofs, or keep the heat on during freezing temperatures.
  • Water damage from intentional acts such as setting fire to your home or intentionally shutting the water off.
  • Water damage from earthquakes, landslides or mudslides
  • Water damage from floods, hurricanes or tsunamis
  • Sewer main backups
  • Swimming pool or other structural leaks
  • Seepage through the foundation of a home
  • Water damage from a sump pump failure

Of course, knowing when is water damage covered by insurance is only half the equation.

Even in cases where water damage may be covered, most homeowners’ policies will not cover the cost of repairing or replacing the cause of the damage, such as buying a new dishwasher or washing machine.

Coverage will only cover mold removal if the water damage was covered by the policy, otherwise, any mold removal or remediation will come out of the homeowner’s pocket.

One of the specific areas people want to know about when asking is water damage covered by insurance is flooding.

While floods can be a major cause of water damage, standard homeowners’ policies do not cover flooding.

For flood protection, you’ll need a secondary policy that can be acquired through FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)

While asking about water damage is covered by insurance is only natural, there are certain types of damage that won’t be covered.

Since homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover damage caused by neglect, it makes good sense to take care of your home so you can protect it from water damage.

Aside from addressing any obvious problems like leaks as soon as you notice them, other steps you can take to prevent water damage include:

  • Draining your water heater twice a year to prevent a buildup of sediment.
  • Installing smart water leak detectors that will notify you whenever a leak is detected and in some cases even shut off the water automatically to prevent damage.
  • Inspect the hoses of all of your appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers to make sure there are no cracks or other signs of wear and replace any worn or damaged hoses.
  • Regularly inspect your roof and make any necessary repairs. This may be the most important step you can take to protect your home as the majority of water damage in most homes stems directly from worn or damaged roofs.
  • Take steps to ensure that your pipes don’t freeze during the winter months. This is particularly important for homes in areas that have harsh winters but it can be effective for any home. Keep your heat set to at least 50 degrees and wrap exposed pipes with some form of insulation.

In many cases, you can help to strengthen your claim by acting quickly to address the cause of water damage and mitigate the effects.

The best way to improve your case is by calling a professional water mitigation company like SERVPRO

The technicians at SERVPRO have extensive training and professional equipment and are guaranteed to respond immediately whenever disaster strikes.

Not only can this help to reduce the growth of hazardous mold and get your home back to normal as quickly as possible, but it can also help to give you peace of mind when it comes to filing your insurance claim and asking what kind of water damage is covered by insurance.

The professionals at SERVPRO are up to date on all of the requirements of the insurance industry and they can help you to be fully prepared when you file your claim so that you can get the best possible result every time.

Knowing what water damage is covered by insurance and having good insurance coverage for water damage can help protect your home against unforeseen problems and when it comes to your home you can’t be too careful.

Do You Have Fire Damage in Your Todd Creek Kitchen?

1/11/2022 (Permalink)

A person uses a fire extinguisher to put out a kitchen fire. Cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires in the United States.

SERVPRO® of Commerce City is a trusted leader in fire damage restoration. Here are some kitchen fire safety tips from Travelers Insurance:

What to Do If a Cooking Fire Flares Up

  • Your safety comes first. If you cannot safely extinguish the fire, leave the scene, call 911 for help, and let the fire department control the fire.
  • If a small fire flares up and you are going to try to extinguish it, call 911 for help first. A fire may grow out of control more quickly than you anticipate.
  • Smother a grease fire – never throw water on a grease fire. The water can be super-heated, change to steam, and cause severe burns. Also, it can cause oil to splash up and spread the fire. If a grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan while wearing an oven mitt. If safe to do so, turn off the heat source. Do not move the pan; keep the lid on until the fire is out and the pan is completely cool.
  • If a fire starts in your oven, keep the door closed and turn off the heat source. Keeping the door closed will help smother the flames. Do not open the door until the flames are completely out.

Are Your Pipes Protected From Freezing in Henderson?

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

A frozen pipe is shown. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Denver.

This time of year, SERVPRO® of Commerce City often responds to water damage emergencies, and many of them involve frozen or burst pipes. The Insurance Information Institute offers these tips on things you can do to minimize the potential for frozen pipes:

  • Identify the location for the main water shutoff in your home
  • Open hot and cold faucets enough to let them drip slowly. Keeping water moving within the pipes will prevent freezing.
  • If you haven’t already, make sure all hoses are disconnected from outside spigots
  • If your garage is attached to your house, keep the garage doors closed. The door leading to the house is probably not as well-insulated as an exterior door.
  • Keep the house heated to a minimum of 65 degrees. The temperature inside the walls where the pipes are located is substantially colder than the walls themselves. A temperature lower than 65 degrees will not keep the inside walls from freezing.
  • If you plan to be away for an extended period of time, have the water system drained by a professional to keep pipes from freezing or bursting

Indoor Plumbing System Leak in Commerce City?

12/7/2021 (Permalink)

A damaged water supply line is shown. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Adams County.

Have you inspected your indoor plumbing systems lately? Routine inspection and maintenance of indoor plumbing can help prevent more costly and time-consuming repairs. SERVPRO® of Commerce City offers these helpful tips from the Insurance Information Institute:

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets. Make it a practice every year to check hoses leading to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerator ice makers. Immediately replace any hoses with cracks or leaks, and replace them all every five to seven years.
  • Inspect showers and tubs. Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine and never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home. A damaged hose or a burst pipe can send water racing into your home. Being able to locate and shut off the main water supply quickly will save stress, money, and time.
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect against the increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any necessary repairs made immediately.

Microwave Fire in Henderson?

11/10/2021 (Permalink)

A microwave oven is shown. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Adams County.

Henderson families are busy. Microwave ovens simplify our lives and make it easy to heat up a meal or quickly defrost dinner. SERVPRO® of Commerce City offers these microwave oven safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • PURCHASE a microwave oven that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Make sure to complete and return the product registration card. This way, the manufacturer can reach you if there is a recall on the product.
  • PLUG the microwave oven directly into the wall outlet — never use an extension cord
  • MAKE sure the microwave oven is at a safe height, within easy reach of all users
  • OPEN food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam or the food itself can cause burns.
  • FOOD heats unevenly in microwave ovens. Stir and test before eating or giving to children.
  • NEVER heat a baby bottle in the microwave. Since a microwave oven heats unevenly, it can create hot pockets, leading to burns. Warm a bottle in a bowl of warm, not hot or boiling, water, or by running it under the tap.

Basement Seepage in Commerce City?

11/3/2021 (Permalink)

Water is seeping through a wall in a basement. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Adams County.

Sixty percent of homes in Colorado have basements, and water seepage is a common challenge for Commerce City homeowners. SERVPRO® of Commerce City offers these tips for properly maintaining your basement to prevent water seepage from the Insurance Information Institute:

Prevent basement water seepage

  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you’ve never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
  • Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall, potentially through any cracks.
  • Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.

SERVPRO® of Commerce City responds to fire damage emergencies throughout the year, and we often arrive onsite as the South Adams Fire Department is leaving the scene. Their website notes that this new rating may lower insurance premiums for some residents.  It is important to check with your insurance company to see if the new rating will translate to lower premiums.

The ISO rating is based on three components:

  1. The community’s emergency communications capabilities, including 911 telephone systems, adequacy of telephone lines, operator supervision and staffing, and dispatching systems.
  2. The quality of the fire department, including adequacy of equipment, sufficiency of staffing, level of training and the geographic distribution of fire companies.
  3. The water system supply in that particular region.

Microwave Fire in Henderson?

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

A microwave oven is shown in a kitchen. Don’t get fried by your microwave oven in Adams County!

Microwave Safety Tips for Henderson

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), if you have a fire in a microwave, leave the door closed, turn off the oven and unplug it from the wall. If the fire does not go out, get outside and call the fire department.  SERVPRO® of Commerce City sees all kinds of fire damage each year and offer these microwave safety tips from the NFPA:

Microwave Safety Tips

  • PURCHASE a microwave oven that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Make sure to complete and return the product registration card. This way the manufacturer can reach you if there is a recall on the product.
  • PLUG the microwave oven directly into the wall outlet — never use an extension cord.
  • MAKE sure the microwave oven is at a safe height, within easy reach of all users.
Warm a bottle in a bowl of warm — not hot or boiling — water, or by running it under the tap.

A dark room is shown lit by a lantern. We are trusted leaders in storm damage restoration services in Adams County.

SERVPRO® of Commerce City responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in Henderson. Power outages can happen for many reasons, so it is always a good idea to be prepared for one. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross for preparing for a power outage:

  • Stock food and water. Store non-perishable food and water supplies for at least two weeks. Plan to use coolers and ice to extend food refrigeration and keep a thermometer in the fridge, freezer, or cooler to monitor the food temperature.
  • Know and plan for your personal and medical electrical needs. Take an inventory of your electrical needs. Consider both backup and non-power alternatives for lighting, communication, medical devices, and refrigerated medicine, cooking, garage doors, locks, and elevators. Discuss a plan with your primary care or medical device providers for your medical needs.
  • Prepare a pet emergency kit for your companion animals.
  • Plan for heating or cooling your home. Use methods such as sealing around windows to insulate your home. If the weather is very hot or very cold, plan to go to a location with air conditioning or with heat. Never use a generator, outdoor stoves, or heaters indoors.

Mold Problem in Commerce City Office?

7/16/2021 (Permalink)

Mold is shown growing inside a cabinet underneath a sink. We mitigate and remediate mold for Adams County businesses.

Mold Mitigation and Remediation for Commerce City Businesses

When I came into work on Monday, there was a musty smell I could not place. I finally tracked it down to underneath the sink in the breakroom. When I opened the cabinet, a waft of musty odor hit me. When I looked inside, I saw mold had colonized inside the cabinet. There was a small leak in the plumbing that probably was encouraging the mold to grow.

I called SERVPRO® of Commerce City and they sent a team out quickly to inspect and assess the damage. They have been mitigating and remediating commercial mold damage for years. First, they identified the source of the moisture as a loose pipe fitting under the sink and repaired the leak. Then they contained the area and began the remediation process. They explained that because mold is always present in the Earth’s atmosphere, it can never be 100 percent eradicated, but it can be mitigated and remediated.

Musty Smell in Commerce City?

My kitchen had a musty, mildewy smell that I couldn’t place, but then I found the mold. One of my kitchen windows leaked, and water had been seeping behind the wood paneling onto the base of the wall. Yikes!

Thankfully, my neighbor told me about SERVPRO® of Commerce City and I’m glad she did. They located the source of the moisture that was causing the mold growth and came up with a plan to mitigate and remediate the mold. They explained to me that because mold is always present in the Earth’s atmosphere, it can never be completely eradicated, but it can be contained and remediated.

Understanding Mold

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed, or the mold may return
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or air conditioning and heating systems
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture
  • Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth
  • Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent to discourage mold growth

Water Intrusion in Henderson?

5/17/2021 (Permalink)

Signs of water damage can be seen under a house where white minerals have built up on the stone foundation. We mitigate storm damage in Adams County.

Water Intrusion Happens

SERVPRO® of Commerce City has been helping Henderson residents mitigate storm damage for years. With spring comes the opportunity for water intrusion, and now is a good time to inspect your basement and crawl spaces and plumbing and drainage systems for signs of leaks or moisture collection. Here are some tips from at Home Colorado for ways to protect your home from water intrusion:

Basements and Crawl Spaces

There should not be any moisture in basements or crawl spaces. Moisture can be an indicator of a cracked and/or leaking foundation wall. A moisture meter can be used to check the moisture content of finished basement walls. Readings should be relatively consistent throughout a basement. Large variations in moisture content of finished walls could indicate a leaking foundation behind.

Inspect Plumbing and Drainage Systems

Check for leaking plumbing fixtures, dripping pipes, clogged drains, and defective water drainage systems. Regularly clean off, then dry all surfaces such as windowsills where moisture can collect. Expansion joints between bricks, pipes and other building materials that absorb movement should be in good condition, or water intrusion can occur. Storage areas should be kept clean. Allow air to circulate to prevent potential moisture accumulation.

Can a Business Use a Portable Generator In an Emergency?

11/12/2020 (Permalink)

Electric generator, used in the rain on the ground. Fuel motor A portable or standby generator could be the right emergency equipment for a business during a power outage

Find Out Which Equipment Will Meet The Needs Of A Business

Frequent or prolonged power outages can damage critical systems at a commercial building in Commerce City, CO. A business owner or facility manage can invest in an emergency backup power source. Commercial standby generators are costly, which might make a portable generator seem like a better solution for the occasional power outage.

Emergency Power Backup Requirements
Choosing the right emergency power backup calls for calculating total kilo-volt-ampere and kilowatt requirements. The following guidelines are helpful for calculating general power usage:

  • 50 kW plus 10 watts per square foot for retail space
  • 30 kW plus 5 watts per square foot for general commercial space
  • An additional kW allowance based on usage

The most wattage is necessary to produce a surge during startup. A generator should then provide sufficient power during a power outage.

Portable Generator Functions and Features
Most portable generators produce less power than commercial standby generators and are not designed to function continuously. Portable models can be relocated to where power is needed most in the event of storm damage during an outage.
Portable generators should always be run in open, well-ventilated areas to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Most portable generators are gasoline powered, which is easy to acquire, but needs to be stored in large quantities and may require the addition of stabilizer.

The Benefits of Commercial Standby Generators
A commercial standby generator is a more reliable and permanent power backup. A standby generator starts automatically as soon as the power goes out and most commercial models supply more power than portable generators. Standby generators also offer business owners a choice of fuel sources.
A portable or standby generator could be the right emergency equipment for a business during a power outage in Commerce City, CO. Business owners should factor in power needs and plan for likely outage durations.

2 Important Emergency Plans for Your Business

11/8/2020 (Permalink)

Evacuation plan - first floor Create a map for each floor of your business that shows exits and other important details

When you started your business, you were careful to prepare for any unseen scenario. You even have a contingency plan in place just in case you need to get your workers to safety, but could they execute it? It is important to have emergency plans that are easy to understand and follow if your employees need to get to safety.

Creating a Thorough Emergency Plan

A contingency plan, also known as an emergency action plan (EAP), is put together by a company to create and carry out certain actions during a workplace emergency. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), an EAP should include:

  • Emergency reporting methods
  • All emergency evacuation routes
  • A way to account for all employees during and after an emergency
  • Instructions for employees who have action plan duties
  • Contacts that employees can reach for further information on their roles in your EAP

Including cleanup procedures and contacts for emergency restoration services is also beneficial.
Every business is different. To create a thorough EAP, you have to consider all of the possible emergencies that could happen at your specific business and your employees' specific needs. Educate your workers on all procedures so that they are ready if an emergency does happen.

Instilling an Evacuation Plan
An important part of emergency preparation is having an evacuation plan and making sure that your workers understand and can execute it calmly. Clearly marked escape routes and employee procedures are a good start. Exit lighting should be bright and easy to find. Create a map for each floor of your business that shows exits and other important details so that your employees can refer to them regularly. One way to make sure they are seen is to place them in high traffic areas such as main lobbies and elevator corridors.
Having a thorough contingency plan gives you peace of mind because if an emergency does happen, you know that you are prepared and can keep your employees in Todd Creek, CO, safe.

How To Prevent Plumbing-Related Business Losses

11/8/2020 (Permalink)

Lower The Risk Of Preventable Losses At A Commercial Property

Water leaks are the source of most business losses. Building owners and managers can take measures to fix damaged pipes or address other plumbing problems at a building located in Northglenn, CO. Here are several ways stakeholders can lower the risk of preventable losses at a commercial property.

Schedule Plumbing Inspections
An annual inspection can greatly reduce a structure’s risk of preventable water damage. All of the following checks take place during a commercial inspection:

  • Backflow testing
  • Flow rate testing
  • Looking for leaking pipes
  • Valve checks

These measures identify issues that could result in damaged pipes, gradual leaks or sewer backups. A proactive approach to commercial plumbing is almost always more affordable than footing bills for emergency repairs, damage cleanup and restoration.

Maintain Appliances and Systems
Several commercial appliances and systems may be connected to the water supply. These connections often employ valves and other hardware that can fail or wear out and require replacement. Doing so in advance has the potential to prevent leaks that involve Category One clean water or contaminated Category Two gray water.

Consider Plumbing Upgrades
In some cases, a plumber may recommend that a building owner foot the bill for costly upgrades to a commercial plumbing system. The owner of a building may want to seek more than one professional opinion, as there may be more than one approach to solving a recurring plumbing problem. Some solutions may be more affordable and only require minor fixes.
Inspections and maintenance can identify minor issues before major problems ensue. From pointing out damaged pipes that could be prone to burst and cause flooding to fixing problems that might shorten the operational lifespan of critical appliances and systems, strictly preventative measures can go a long way to protect a property in Northglenn, CO. Having damage fixed, mitigated, cleaned or restored by professionals reduces the risk of further losses.

3 Ways To Spend Less On Maintenance

10/20/2020 (Permalink)

Sealant gun crack covers the crack in the floor of the wall tile concrete It’s a good idea to start small when it comes to maintenance

Three Ways To Keep Service Costs Low

Home maintenance costs can add up to a considerable sum. The best way to lower maintenance cost for any structural system or appliance is to handle issues sooner than later and anticipate potential problems. Most systems, such as HVAC or plumbing, can be maintained for years without major emergency incidents as long as homeowners schedule routine upkeep. Here are three of the best ways to keep service costs low and maximize the operational life of every system in a home.

1. Fix Minor Problems
It’s a good idea to start small when it comes to maintenance. Addressing issues that seem minor when they arise can help to prevent serious issues from developing down the road. In general, scheduled or preventative maintenance is more affordable than emergency repairs in terms of the cost of parts, labor and incidentals.

2. Do Preventative Maintenance
Homeowners should schedule periodic inspections of the structural systems, appliances and other aspects of a residence. Inspections may draw attention to issues that require maintenance. Cleaning components and getting the parts necessary to prevent problems from occurring down the line tends to have a lower maintenance cost than fixing broken parts and restoring damage.

3. Get Jobs Done Right
It is important to have trained professionals install, service and repair home appliances and systems such as HVAC and plumbing. Maintaining high facility management standards may cost a little more per job, but the risk of experiencing major problems that prove very costly is significantly reduced. Bonded and insured professionals also typically guarantee their work.
The longer a problem persists, the more severe it may become and the higher the maintenance cost. When it comes to structural systems and appliances at a home in Henderson, CO, regularly scheduled inspections, maintenance, preventative measures and timely repairs can help homeowners avoid costly emergency fixes for major problems that can cause major damage.

How To Handle a Flood in Your Kitchen

Steps To Minimize The Damage In Your Home

For many homeowners in Commerce City, CO, subtle leaks beneath a kitchen sink or an appliance can go unnoticed until they lead to extensive damage. Flooding not only causes inconvenience; it can lead to:

  • Loss of Property
  • Expensive Repairs
  • Formation of Mold

After discovering a leak, it is necessary to take the following steps to minimize the damage and liability resulting from water in home.

Cut off the Water Supply.
Immediately locate and turn off the water supply as soon as possible after discovering a leak. If a broken pipe valve makes this impossible, find the house's primary water supply valve and turn that off.

Contact Your Insurance Company.
Pipe and appliance leaks can potentially lead to a devastating amount of water in home. As soon as you turn off the water supply flooding your kitchen, contact your insurance provider for advice about proceeding. Many homeowner policies cover damages resulting from sudden, unexpected pipe bursts or defects as long as reasonable measures have been taken to address ongoing problems. Coverage may also apply to damages caused by appliances but not the repair or replacement of appliances. Contacting your insurance provider is the most reliable way to know what is and is not covered.

Arrange for Professional Help.
Your insurance carriers will recommend professional services to help during a flood's aftermath. The necessary first step toward recovering from a kitchen flood is isolating the cause. Common culprits include corroded sink pipes, faulty refrigerator ice makers and defective dishwasher doors. After addressing the flood's source, homeowners can commence kitchen repair with the help of a flood restoration company that provides various services including, water extraction and the prevention or removal of mold in the air, under floorboards and on furniture and cabinets.
When unexpected flooding in your kitchen causes damage requiring extensive cleanup and repairs, a local Commerce City, CO flood restoration team can bring your kitchen back to normal.

Focus on Water Damage To Prevent Mold Growth

Digital temperature and humidity control High moisture levels encourage mold growth

Mold Preventions Steps

Nature may not be able to be controlled, but it can be monitored. Homeowners in Henderson, CO, can take preventative measures against frustrating and costly fungus growth. The spores become problematic when they interact with moisture. This source acts as a catalyst, kicking off swift reproduction; thus, by concentrating on minimizing the water exposure, residents gain some command of the development. The following mold prevention steps should be used to maintain a dry environment.

1. Lower the House's Humidity Level
High moisture levels encourage mold growth. That isn't always visible. Sometimes, it's in the air. When the saturation is above 60%, the dampness can trigger mold spores to begin feeding on any organic matter it encounters. People can battle this concern by taking several actions. Run the air conditioner regularly. It encourages cool circulation and pulls out excess wetness. If that isn't enough, then purchase dehumidifiers for locations that can't be controlled.

2. Inspect Plumbing Often
Another tactic in mold prevention is to remain vigilant about your pipes. Small leaks can become major problems when they linger for longer periods of time. It permits for saturation. Look for signs of trouble. Open cabinet doors, and inspect under sinks. Signs of rust, stains and discoloration indicate issues. Call out plumbers to make repairs. Also, look behind your appliances, checking the utility lines.

3. Tend to Flooding Immediately
If an overflow happens, don't let the water damage fester. Call out a mold remediation team to evaluate the premises, determining the extent of restoration. The area requires immediate drying, and some sections may need to be torn out, avoiding excess levels of spores. Then, the crew can apply antimicrobial spray, and rebuild anything that was ruined.
Proactive owners can thwart major reconstruction tasks. It takes making mold prevention a priority. Have a thorough understanding of how the contamination begins and how to stop it in its tracks.

What To Do Before Turning Sprinklers On

9/23/2020 (Permalink)

Once the last freeze of winter has thawed, the sprinkler system on your commercial property in Commerce City, needs to be readied for spring. If you turn the sprinklers on without making sure they're ready, you risk breaking your water lines or flooding your lawn. Here are a few irrigation maintenance steps to check off your list before you run the sprinklers for the first time.
Inspect Sprinkler Heads
One busted sprinkler head can cause major water issues. Take the time to inspect them properly by completing the following tasks:

Clean each nozzle with a toothbrush.
Check each head for damage.
Make sure every valve except the on farthest from the source is closed.

Sprinkler flooding is easy to avoid; it just takes time. By checking each sprinkler head, you can be confident that they will work once the system is turned on.
Switch on Control Panel
You won't know if your irrigation maintenance plan is successful until you test it by turning on the control panel. After cleaning it off and making sure the backup battery is new, switch it on so that you can set the correct date and time.
Open the Main Valve
Once the control panel is activated, you can open the water valve. Start slowly so that if anything is wrong, you won't have a big mess on your hands that only water remediation specialists can fix. Allow the water to flow into each branch and slowly open the valve more until it is fully functional.
Check Zones
You should be able to control which zones get water at which time intervals through your control panel. Alternate zones so that you can see that the system is actually doing what you are telling it to do.
Once you have completed this checklist, you are ready to set your automatic watering times. Performing regular irrigation maintenance throughout the season helps you make sure that it is continuing to work as it should.

Where's the Damage

Carpet and wood floors

A Weak Garage Door Can Cause A Severely Damaged Roof

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

A Weak Garage Door Can Cause A Severely Damaged Roof

Heavy thunderstorms often create high-wind conditions in Henderson, CO. Severe weather produces large hail, strong winds, and even potentially tornadoes – all of which can cause a damaged roof.
The National Weather Service closely monitors local weather and issues all official storm alerts. A severe thunderstorm is defined as one that develops one or all of these signs:

  • Hail that is at least 1 inch in diameter or larger.
  • Wind gusts of 58 mph or greater.
  • A tornado of any size.

One of the more surprising causes of a roof leak is a weak garage door. It’s often neglected, so it’s a potential soft spot in the building envelope.

The Weak Links
Any area in a business that isn’t reinforced is a possible weak link. Windows are the most obvious of these. Not only are they structurally weak, but the broken glass is also a serious hazard to property and an extreme hazard to humans.
Doors can be weak points, depending on how they were built. Roofs that are missing shingles or have received previous debris strikes are likely to develop a roof leak. But garage doors are a special case: they have a huge surface area compared to their frame and can buckle in under certain wind conditions.

Under the Roof
Once the garage door is gone, wind can become concentrated in the garage if it’s blowing straight in. This creates a great deal of lift under the garage roof. It’s common in these circumstances for the roofing structure to be damaged beyond simple repair.

Inspect the Frame
If you suspect your garage door frame is weak or that you have a roof leak, you can have it inspected by a local storm damage remediation company. A garage door that wiggles back and forth is clearly a candidate for inspection. If any of the framing is not secured to the wall, it should be repaired immediately, especially when severe weather is expected.
Once the storm passes, your remediation company can use plywood and tarps to secure exposed areas. This prevents further water damage or mischief by curious humans.

What Storm Insurance Coverage Do You Need?

9/7/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know that your business could be affected by storm damage no matter where you live?

• Hurricane season affects the East Coast between June 1 and November 30.
• The Eastern Pacific has to worry about hurricane season from May 15 to November 30.
• In 2018, the southern states experienced many deaths because of storm-related flooding.
• Severe weather may lead to hail as much as 2 inches across and winds as fast as 75 miles per hour.

How will your Commerce City, business do if it's hit by any of these storm conditions? Are you prepared with the right storm insurance?

Standard Exclusions for Building Insurance

When you have insurance coverage, you can expect to be covered in the event of fires, theft, vandalism, and windstorms. However, standard property insurance doesn't cover earthquakes, flooding, or hurricanes. You need to add the right policies to get this coverage. Standard commercial coverage is vital for your business, but it isn't enough to protect you from storm-related losses. That standard coverage may also have exclusions for

• Specialized equipment
• Expensive gear
• Inventory stored out of the building

If you run a business out of your home, there may be issues reconciling commercial property coverage and storm insurance for private property.

Replacement-Value vs. Actual-Cash-Value Coverage

Research the difference between replacement-value and actual-cash-value coverage. If your property is damaged or lost, you want to be sure your storm damage insurance will cover the replacement costs of that property. You'll probably pay more for the coverage, but if you're hit by storm damage, you'll be glad for the extra protection. Actual-cash-value coverage takes depreciation into account, so even if you purchased equipment new, you'll get less money after you've owned and used it.

Before your business is affected by storm damage, make sure you have the right storm insurance. If you have more questions, ask local storm damage remediation professionals for area-specific answers.

4 Steps to Take Before a Storm

9/1/2020 (Permalink)

If you are expecting a storm in Commerce City, and want to protect your home and family, there are several steps that you should follow. Flood water can cause quite a bit of damage and can compromise your safety, so keep these tips in mind during bad weather.

1. Have a Safety Plan

One of the most important things to do before a storm is to create a plan. You should know what you will do if the power goes out or, if the storm is severe, what you will do in the case of a flooded building. Consider all possibilities and be prepared.

2. Check Doors and Windows

To protect your home from water damage, you should make sure all of your doors and windows are properly sealed. A loose or broken seal can allow water to get inside, and even a small amount can cause problems. It is a good idea to perform regular maintenance on your home to prevent this.

3. Inspect the Outside of the House

If you have cracks in the exterior of your house, moisture can build up inside of the walls and damage the structure of the building. It can also contribute to the growth of mold. This fungus spreads quickly in dark, moist environments and can cause both discoloration and a musty odor.

4. Create an Emergency Kit

Depending on the type and severity of the storm, the contents of your emergency kit may vary. Some useful items to include are flashlights, radios, batteries, canned foods, and bottled water. Flood water can cause contamination, so you shouldn’t consume anything it touches.

Being prepared can help keep both your family and your home safe. However, if you do experience damage from a storm or flood water, a water damage remediation specialist can help get your home back to its previous condition. They can perform remediation, make repairs and restore damaged belongings.

What To Expect When Rebuilding After a Commercial Fire

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

There is a lot to consider when a fire breaks out at your business in Commerce City, and you are figuring out the process of rebuilding. A good first step is to get an estimate from a reputable fire restoration company. A full-service company will make several considerations when they send contractors to your property to make a bid.

1. Secondary Damage

When a commercial fire has caused damage to your property, the first job the contractors will do is prevent secondary damage. This will likely start with boarding up the doors, windows, and damaged walls to prevent intrusion, theft, or wandering critters. If there is damage to the roof, then a temporary roof tarp can be put in place to prevent further destruction from weather. If there is concern about theft in the area, then a surveillance system may be installed or a security guard may be dispatched to the property.

2. Removal Services

Before the restoration process can begin, there needs to be a good cleanup of the property. If the fire department was dispatched to the property, the logical first step is to clean out any remaining water and then estimate the level of water damage. The contractors can then assess how much smoke damage and fire odor is left behind and what procedures are needed to correct the problem. Any unsalvageable debris will most likely be removed, which can help eradicate a lot of the smoke smell.

3. Restoration of Salvageable Materials

Any items or materials that can be saved will likely be packed up and sent to cleaning facilities in order to remove any smoke or fire damage. The rest of the items can then be moved to storage facilities for the duration of the restoration process.

Calling a fire restoration company to provide an estimate is a smart first step when your business suffers a fire. The contractors can provide a good accounting for how much it will cost to fix your property and work with your insurance company to make sure you have the best experience getting back into business.

5 Ways To Upkeep a Commercial Roof

8/10/2020 (Permalink)

Roof damage or deterioration can be very costly. In addition to the price of materials and labor for repairs or replacing a roof, this damage can also damage building materials and contents. Property owners can follow five simple steps to preserve the condition of a commercial roof.

1. Inspect the roof at least twice a year. Make sure you know about potential issues and all of your upkeep options to extend the life of a roof. Do this by having experts perform annual inspections. If you know what to look for, you can do at least one of these inspections yourself.

2. Trim trees with overhanging branches. Reducing the number of branches and leaves that accumulate on the roof can help to keep drainage systems clear. Tree maintenance can also prevent heavy limbs from falling in the event of high winds or adverse weather conditions.

3. Clear drainage systems regularly. Water that cannot drain may pool and work its way under roofing materials, resulting in leaks. Make sure that leaves and other debris are not blocking downspouts, drains, or gutters, and that drainage is routed away from the foundation.

4. Regularly repair minor roofing issues. Extend the amount of time before a roof rebuild by addressing roof damage as soon as it occurs.

5. Have your roof waterproofed. Waterproofing can help to prevent cracks and leaks. A roofing service can help you determine the right methods and materials for your property.

A regular maintenance schedule can help property owners address roof damage and wind damage in a timely manner. Keeping an eye on the condition of your roof can extend the life of this part of your building and prevent costly leaks. If a roof sustains damage or deteriorates to the point where the interior suffers water damage, property owners should contact a company in Commerce City, that specializes in commercial damage restoration.

4 Things Not To Do After a Flood

Floodwaters in the entrance of a home Flood damage in a Henderson, CO home

4 Things Not To Do After a Flood

During a storm, flood water can invade your home and cause considerable damage to your property. However, your main priority should always be to get yourself, your family members, and your pets to safety. Once the storm has passed, you can return to assess the damage and begin the cleanup process. Here are four things you should not do when returning to the site of a flood.

1. Make Contact With the Water
Floodwater can contain many different types of contaminants including bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and debris. Help protect your skin from harmful water by wearing rubber boots and gloves and keeping your hands and face from making contact with the water. If contact occurs despite your best efforts, wash immediately with soap and clean water.

2. Enter Standing Water
After a flood, homes, yards, streets, and other areas can be covered in standing water. Powerful winds often accompany heavy storms, so it is not uncommon to find downed powerlines after a storm. Since water from a flood is usually murky, you cannot always tell what lies beneath the surface. If the water has been electrically charged, you could experience an electric shock if you enter a flooded home. Rubber boots will help protect against the risk of electrocution.

3. Let the Water Sit
The longer water sits, the more time bacteria have to multiply. When items are left to sit in water for long periods of time, the structural integrity of those items can begin to break down. The water should be safely extracted as soon as possible. By cleaning the water faster, you can help to lessen any water damage to your home. Since mold can begin forming in as little as 24 to 48 hours, it is important to begin the drying process as soon as the water has been extracted.
By following a few precautions, you can help keep yourself safe from the dangers of floodwater. If you have experienced a flood in Henderson, CO, a professional flood restoration company can help get your home back to its pre-flood condition.

Understanding Secondary Damage

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

When you have a flood in your commercial building in Commerce City, it's hard to know what the extent of the damage will be until you get a remediation team in there for an inspection. This crew can help you do the following:

• Assess the damage.
• Create a repair plan.
• Initiate cleanup.

As the professionals are assessing your damage, you may hear them talk about primary and secondary damage. Here's what you need to know about damage that's caused indirectly by the waters.

What It Doesn't Include

This secondary form of destruction can include a wide range of damage, but it doesn't include everything done to your building. The primary damage is anything done when the pipe burst or the roof leaked. For example, black mold growth wasn't caused directly by the flooding, but damaged walls and ceilings may have been.

How It's Formed

Because this type of damage only includes the harm done after the flooding has ceased, how is the damage done? Often slow reaction time, improper cleanup and hidden problems cause what the professionals consider to be nonprimary damage. For example, black mold growth does not happen the instant a flood starts. Instead, it takes 24 to 48 hours to begin. High humidity may also be a secondary type of damage because it takes place when the water is allowed to sit for too long or is not completely removed from the building.

What It Does Include

Because it's caused by slow reactions, this damage can include mold growth, unsalvageable furnishings, water contamination and the spread of the flood. If a pipe bursts on the second floor, the water may start to travel to lower levels if it is not caught soon enough. The path of the water may be considered secondary or primary damage depending on what caused the travel.

Mold growth, including black mold, is often considered a type of secondary damage. However, your commercial space could by affected by other types of secondary destruction if you don't properly address water issues right away.

How To Dry Out a Building After a Pipe Burst

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

When a pipe bursts in your building, you need to think quickly and stay on your toes to avoid more problems. The best way to go about restoring the property after water intrusion is to first ensure that your building is as dry as possible. While you are waiting for experts to arrive, there are things you can do that will speed up the drying process. Here are some damage tips to keep in mind when drying out your Commerce City, building.

1. Assess the Damage

Following a pipe burst, the first thing you’ll want to do is to mindfully walk around your property and document any problems. Although diving into cleanup will increase your chances of salvaging parts of your property, there will likely already be some things that are beyond minor repair. Accurate documentation will aid you when you speak with your insurance company about these damages.

2. Let In the Breeze

Natural air is often the best way to dry out your building. One of the best damage tips you can follow is to immediately open the windows in any of the rooms that have been affected by the water. You can also bring in fans, which will offer additional circulation in places that outside air may not be able to reach.

3. Get Rid Of the Water

You can tackle standing water with a wet/dry vacuum to ensure that some of the moisture is removed from the building right away. Other important cleaning tips are to grab any soaked furniture or rugs and place them outside. They can dry in the fresh air, and the water in your building will evaporate faster without the added moisture of wet fabric.

A burst pipe most definitely warrants a visit from a professional water removal specialist to help with the cleanup. In the meantime, these damage tips can help you jump-start the drying process.

How To Prepare for Storm Season

7/28/2020 (Permalink)

"Heavy storms can be unpredictable, but one thing you can predict is how you will respond if they affect your building in Commerce City. You may not be able to prevent all flood water from invading your place of business. Instead, plan what you will do if such an event occurs.
Have an Emergency Plan
Every business owner should have a plan for dealing with a flooded building. There are several questions your plan needs to answer:

Who makes the decision to start emergency protocol?
How do people evacuate the building?
What are the necessary tasks that need to be accomplished, and who is in charge of each one?
How do employees communicate with you and one another during the emergency?

When you know that flood water is an imminent danger, an emergency plan can help you keep the people in your building safe and help you minimize damage to the building.
Back Up Vital Data
It's always important to back up vital data, but it is especially necessary during storm season. The main threat to the items in your building during a storm is probably water damage. Equipment that cannot be repaired can be replaced fairly easily, but this is not the case with important documents. If the information is lost, it could set your business back. A digital backup may end up saving you money and time.
Set Mitigation Process in Motion
If your building is damaged by a storm, you don't want to wait to call in repairs. A water cleanup company can assess the damage to your building, provide an estimate of the cost of remediation and give you a timeline for how long the process is likely to take. Make sure you have the number of a trusted company readily available in case you need it.
You may not be able to avoid storms, but you can prepare for them. By planning ahead, you may be able to minimize the impact that impending flood water has on your business."

5 Facts About Mold Remediation

7/17/2020 (Permalink)

When you own commercial property in Commerce City, there are a few basic things you need to know to keep your building safe and in good working order. Understanding how mold growth happens is a vital part of managing your property well. Here are a few facts that every building owner needs to understand about the dreaded fungus.

1. You cannot remove all mold from your building. Mold spores travel inside every time the door opens. It attaches to shoes, clothes, bags and hair. It doesn't necessarily become a problem until it starts to form patches.

2. You may smell mold before you can see it. When mold begins to collect on surfaces, it gives off a musty odor. Even if it's hidden under carpet or in air ducts, you may know it's there because of the smell.

3. Mold needs moisture to thrive. Mold growth can happen anywhere there is excess moisture in your building. Spores from the air land and start to form fuzzy patches.

4. Humidity can trigger a mold problem. Even moisture in the air can lead to a mold problem. The indoor humidity should stay below 50% at all times in order to deter growth. Keep high humidity at bay by using dehumidifiers and keeping your building well ventilated.

5. Mold can start growing on damp materials in as little as a day. Water damage specialists respond quickly to calls for repair because they know that even the smallest delay could lead to secondary damage such as mold. The faster they repair the damage caused by flooding, the less likely a mold problem is to develop.

Good management of your commercial property entails knowing all the problems that could befall it. Knowing how to recognize and even prevent mold growth can help you keep your building in good shape and help you train employees or tenants how to assist in the preventative maintenance process.

3 Common Causes of Water Damage in Your Home

7/16/2020 (Permalink)

When Mother Nature has a bad day in Commerce City, sometimes you do too. Many different natural disasters can lead to flooding inside of your home. Unfortunately, even on a sunny day you can experience a pipe burst or water line break that causes the same result. Be aware of three common causes of residential water damage and what to do if it happens to you.

1. Natural Disasters

Torrential downpours are not the only event in nature that can cause flooding in your house. Hurricanes, snowstorms, ice or hailstorms can be sources of water damage, and even fires can be a potential threat due to firefighting efforts. In any of these emergency situations, consider your safety first. After you and your family are out of danger, contact a storm damage and water restoration company that specializes in emergency services. From tarping a roof to prevent further damage to removing the excess flood waters, professionals can walk you through the steps needed to return your home to preloss condition.

2. Broken Pipe or Line Break

When a pipe burst or water line break occurs, your house can become flooded with clean, uncontaminated water. In this situation, take action immediately to reduce the risk of secondary water damage. A water restoration specialist can inspect the damage and remove the standing water, and they can also dry, dehumidify and restore your home and its contents.

3. Sewage Backup

A sewer backup is an emergency situation due to the level of contamination in sewage. Immediately leave your home and do not touch the contaminated water. Specialists typically arrive within a few hours with the appropriate equipment to safely remove the water and debris. Your home and possessions will be dried, sanitized and restored.

Whether the cause is from nature or a man-made source, flooding at your home in Commerce City, should be addressed promptly. When a rainstorm or pipe burst ruins your day, take action by calling in professional water restoration experts. Also, check with your homeowners insurance agent to see if water damage is covered under your policy.

Making Sure You Are Covered for a Commercial Flood

7/16/2020 (Permalink)

Weather events that cause flooding are occurring with increasing frequency. If your Commerce City, location is at risk for flooding or your property has been water damaged, this discussion about commercial insurance coverage may answer some of your questions. Will your business insurance cover flood cleanup and restoration at your commercial facility? The answer is, it depends. Most types of commercial flood damage are excluded from your conventional insurance policy but would be covered under a special flood insurance policy.
Government-Issued Insurance
Commercial flood policies are purchased separately from the government’s insurance program. The source of the flooding determines which type of coverage applies. If any of the following caused your business to flood, a government insurance policy would generally cover you:

Overflowing rivers or streams
Blocked storm drainage systems
Storm surge from hurricanes, severe storms or snowmelt
Broken dams or levees
Broken municipal water mains

You may be required to purchase a government-issued policy if your property is in a high flood-risk area. Your insurance agent will generally be able to help you evaluate and purchase flood insurance.
Commercial Insurance
Storm-related water damage will be covered by your conventional insurance policy if the damage came from above ground level. For instance, if hail or a tree branch breaks your skylight and heavy rain causes damage to your property, your commercial policy would be responsible. Most types of internal water damage, such as broken pipes and leaking appliances, would also be eligible for coverage by your business policy.
Flood Risk
Even if your property is not in a designated high-risk flood area, you could still bear some flood risk and benefit from purchasing flood coverage. If you are located in an area known for heavy snowmelt or significant rainstorms, you bear some risk. Water can back up behind a clogged storm drain and quickly lead to rising floodwaters.
Flood damage is often quite costly, and it’s important to understand your coverage options for various scenarios. Then you can decide whether to pursue government-issued insurance, rely on your commercial insurance policy, or purchase additional flood insurance.

The Three Water Categories and What your Should Know

After flooding in your Commerce City, CO, home, you may be concerned about the possibility of contaminated water. A local water damage restoration service can help with repairs, but the methods they will use will depend on which category of water they are dealing with. Here’s what you should know.

1. White Water

White water is the first water category flooding can be categorized in. this water comes from a source that is uncontaminated and safe for consumption, such as a supply line. In most cases, as long as this type of flooding is cleaned up quickly there shouldn’t be any need for major concern.

2. Greywater

The second category contains lightly contaminated water and is often referred to as grey. This is water that has been used for things such as cooking or cleaning. Sources of greywater flooding often include flooded sink drains or pipes, or leaking appliances such as a washing machine. This type of flooding can cause minor irritation if it comes into contact with the skin, so safety gear should be worn.

3. Black Water

The third category is called black water. This is a term that is used any time there’s a chance that the water may have been contaminated by harmful chemicals or bacteria. In most cases, this is water that has come into contact with sewage material. Stormwater falls into this category because it is difficult to determine the path of flow. If the flooding is determined to fall into this third category then extra safety precautions may be taken during clean up, as well as additional cleaning steps to sanitize the area.

The water category will determine what type of contaminated water the flooding in your home contains. White water is considered safe for consumption where as grey water may have mild contaminants such as soap of food particles. Blackwater may have come in contact with sewage and may require additional cleaning steps during the restoration process.

Teach Your Kids To Safely Escape a House Fire

If your home caught fire tonight, would your family know what to do? A fire escape plan should be well thought out and practiced long before a disaster can occur. Teaching your kids safety procedures for a safe escape can mean the difference between life and death in the wake of a home fire. Make sure to hold fire drills and have your kids practice:

1. Rolling
If you’re in bed, you should roll out of bed onto the floor. Ceiling level temperatures can be several hundred degrees hotter than the floor; sitting up in bed could be too risky. Roll over in bed facing down at the floor. Then, slide yourself down onto the floor.

2. Crawling
Avoid as much smoke and heat as possible by staying at floor level. Get on all fours and then lower your forearms to the floor. Next, put your nose close to the floor and begin crawling to safety.

3. Checking
Opening a door during a home fire can have an explosive effect due to the addition of fresh oxygen into a fire-engulfed area. So, teach your kids safety methods for exiting a closed room. Place the back of your hand on the door. If it’s hot to the touch, keep it closed. If it’s not hot, slowly crack it open and look out; crawl out if the area is clear. If smoke comes in or fire is too close, immediately close the door to slow fire advancement.

4. Escaping
Secondary routes should be included in your plan whenever possible. If you can’t safely get out of the bedroom, you should close the door. Then, open the window and scream for help while waving something to get attention.

5. Waiting
Your kids may not realize how fast fire spreads. Make sure they know to never, under any circumstance, return to the house once they’re out. They should understand that everyone will meet in a designated safe area and that firefighters will handle the rest.
Teach your kids safety measures for dealing with different possible emergencies. If your Henderson, CO, home experiences fire damage, call on fire cleanup experts for your restoration needs.

Sprinkler system in the ceiling 5 methods for odor removal

The smell of smoke may linger long after fire or smoke damage in a home in Commerce City. Here are five effective smoke cleaning methods for getting rid of every trace of smoke odor.

1. Ozone Machines

These machines release ozone molecules that follow the same paths as smoke and work to neutralize odors. This treatment is fast and highly effective, but requires that occupants evacuate a residence.

2. Thermal Foggers

A thermal fogger fills an area with fog, which is allowed to stand for about thirty minutes. Evacuation is necessary and the treated area must be ventilated and allowed to dry before occupants can return. This treatment should be administered by smoke damage cleanup professionals.

3. HVAC Air Scrubbers

An HVAC air scrubber connects to the central air system and filters air as it circulates. These smoke cleaning mechanisms filter out particles and do not neutralize any odors. It may be helpful to combine this treatment with a deodorization method.

4. Hydroxyl Generators

A hydroxyl generator is an alternative to an ozone machine that does not require evacuation. This odor neutralization method relies on ultraviolet light to produce radicals that destroy smoke particles. Although this treatment can be effective, it is likely to take three to five times as long as an ozone treatment.

5. Vapor Modification

Vapor modification relies on aromatic compounds and a blower or fan to neutralize the odor of smoke. This treatment can take place while occupants remain in a home, but it is also slower than more intensive treatments.

The best smoke cleaning method depends on the severity of smoke odor in a residence and whether temporary evacuation is possible. Ozone machines and thermal foggers are fast and effective treatments that call for temporary evacuation. Air scrubbers, hydroxyl generators, and vapor modification take longer, but allow occupants to remain at home in Commerce City.

When your Commerce City, commercial building is damaged by flooding, it can be difficult to know where to begin with cleanup efforts. Waterlogged drywall, ruined carpeting and damaged machinery may only be a few issues you have to deal with. However, there are a few steps you can take to begin the recovery process, and knowing some helpful damage tips may give you peace of mind as you work to restore your business.

1. Reduce Humidity Levels

After a flood, the humidity levels in your building may spike due to increased water vapor in the air. This may accelerate mold growth, especially in the case of black mold. Because this type of fungus can spread quickly, it is wise to lower humidity any way you can. Open the windows, run fans and turn on your building’s air conditioner if you have been told it is safe to do so. These damage tips may help you keep the threat of mold at bay until help arrives.

2. Call for Professional Flood Mitigation

If a pipe burst in your employee restroom and caused a flood, you may believe there is no hurry in calling for cleanup because the damage has already been done. However, calling in a flood damage and restoration company as soon as you can may reduce the risk of long-term problems, such as mold growth and structural weakness. Flood technicians might also be able to prevent the spread of flood waters to other areas of your building and prevent them from reaching major systems, such as electrical fuse panels.

3. Sort and Set Aside Items for Restoration

Flood technicians may be able to offer you cleaning tips and restoration options for your inventory or office equipment. While not all items may be salvageable, having assistance during this process can help you feel more confident about recovery.

Facing a flood at your Commerce City, business can be a stressful experience. However, being aware of a few helpful damage tips can give you the peace of mind you need to begin cleanup and restoration efforts.

Understanding Secondary Damage

5/7/2020 (Permalink)

A Business impact plan What is secondary damage?

The Cost Difference Between Mitigation and Restoration During a Flood

5/6/2020 (Permalink)

Rain pouring off the roof of a house Be prepared for flooding

Floods continue to be the most prevalent and expensive natural disaster in America. While preventative measures provide quicker and less expensive alternatives to the cost of hiring a flood cleanup company, many property owners do not mitigate against flood damage. This results in high costs and a lengthy restoration process.

Flood Prevention

One of the best preventative recommendations for flood damage is flood insurance, which property owners may purchase through the National Flood Insurance Program, managed by the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (FIMA), for an average of $700 per year.

Some other preventative methods include the following:

• Sealing basement walls with compounds that are waterproof
• Installing reflux valves to prevent drains from backing up
• Moving heat and electrical sources to higher levels
• Backing up data to the cloud
• Making a flood plan, including work-from-home opportunities

Once in place, these measures offer protection, year after year. Even better, property owners can usually have the cost partially or fully covered by FIMA.

Flood Cleanup

In contrast, property owners who did not take preventative measures must hire a flood cleanup company out of pocket. Every day the business is closed is a day of income lost, while the company may have salaried staff to pay.

Drying out the business may take the restoration company a few days, and this can only begin after the flood waters recede. Restoration to pre-flood conditions may only require an additional few days, but in worst case scenarios, it may take a business a while to completely rebuild. Not surprisingly, FEMA estimates that 40 percent of small businesses, many of which do not invest in preventative measures, fail to recover from natural disasters.

When it comes to flood damage, prevention is always better than a cure. Sure, a reputable flood cleanup company may restore your place of business in a matter of days, but investing in proactive measures is the best approach to natural disasters in Commerce City.

Why Does the Sewer Back Up After a Storm?

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

Lightning in the sky Don't let storms stop your business

As a commercial building owner in Commerce City, you are responsible for taking care of your property after a storm. You have to know who to call to take care of a problem. When you first enter your building, you may notice a foul, sewer smell. Sewer backup during a storm does not always happen, but it can. You may have to deal with this problem for the following reasons:

• Excess water
• Blockages
• Breaks

No matter why you have sewage seeping into your building, you may want to call in a commercial storm remediation team right away.

Excess Water

Storms are often associated with rain water. When there is a lot of water falling at once, the ground may not be able to hold it all. As the water table rises, flooding happens all over the area. Not only does the rising water table push water into basements and low-lying areas, but it also causes the sewer to run out of space. When the sewer cannot go down, it must come up.

Blockages

Storms can also lead to blockages in your pipes or in other parts of the sewer system. When rocks and other debris are washed into the sewer, it may block up some of the piping. This again leaves the traveling sewage with few options. Because it cannot go forward, you may have to deal with a sewer backup.

Breaks

When trees and powerlines are downed, sewer lines can get broken. When these lines are broken, you may have to deal with contaminated, black water seeping into your commercial building. A break may take a while to take care of, so your sewage may have to be turned off until the problem can be properly addressed.

It is never fun to deal with a sewer backup. When this issue is accompanied by other storm damage, you may feel overwhelmed and worried without the help of a team of experts.

The Insurance Adjuster Considers It a Partial Loss

4/28/2020 (Permalink)

Hand holding a lit match Call us when you experience fire damage on your property

You have just had a serious fire. The flames are out, the tarps are in place and the windows are boarded up. Once the building is secured from the elements, it’s time for the insurance adjuster to open the claim, assess the damage and most likely tell you that it is a partial loss. However, when it comes to a serious fire loss, it is important for you to bring in your own expert.

Add a Licensed Professional Engineer to Your Team

The adjuster only represents the interests of the insurance company. You need someone to represent your interests. A licensed professional engineer with fire loss experience and a structural engineering background can help in several ways.

• Evaluate the steel beams and iron components, looking for damage from intense heat.
• Evaluate HVAC and ductwork for fire and smoke damage.
• Inspect the roof, exterior walls and siding for evidence of hidden damage from the heat.
• Identify areas where fire and smoke damage need to be repaired before new walls go up.
• Evaluate water damage and check for the presence of mold in water-damaged areas.

Present the Engineer’s Report of Actual Damage

This is where the fun begins. The engineer identified problems that the adjuster couldn’t or didn’t want to see. If all damage identified by the engineer is repaired, the cost is going to be higher than the adjuster’s estimate. Next comes the negotiation but, when it comes to fire restoration claims, nothing is easy. Hopefully, the negotiation will be a matter of the engineer and adjuster discussing their estimates using language that you probably wouldn’t understand. If they come to an agreement, and if you agree, the work can begin.

Bring in the Contractors and Get Started

When dealing with a fire loss, quality restoration is best handled by skilled professionals and specialized equipment. You are fortunate that a team of fire restoration specialists can be found close by in Commerce City. See how smoothly things go with experts on the job.

How To Avoid Space Heater Fires

4/27/2020 (Permalink)

Remains of vacant house after a fire Fire damage is no problem for SERVPRO

A space heater can provide extra warmth. It can also save on heating bills by allowing you to set the thermostat in your home in Commerce City, on low while still heating the specific rooms you are using to a comfortable temperature. A burned space heater doesn't help you, though. To avoid space heater fires, you need to follow a few simple tips.

Give It Space

The heating elements on a space heater give off an impressive amount of heat, but they can turn into a fire hazard quickly if they are crowded. There are several guidelines to make sure you have enough space around your heater:

• Maintain radius of three feet from flammable objects
• Don't use near combustible substances, such as gasoline
• Keep children and pets away from heater
• Set it on a level surface so it doesn't topple over

Turn It Off

To avoid having a burned space heater when you leave the room, remember to turn it off. Space heaters should never be left unattended while they are on, especially if you leave the house altogether. In fact, it's a good idea to unplug the heater when you are not at home. Keep an eye out for a frayed or otherwise damaged cord.

Keep It Clean

Keep your space heater clean to minimize fire risk. Dust and other debris can turn a functioning space heater into an electric fireplace in a hurry. Replace filters regularly according to the manufacturer's recommendation so that dirt does not infiltrate the heating mechanism. Follow maintenance instructions so that it not only lasts a long time but also does not become a safety issue.

A burned space heater can turn convenience into a nightmare. By following these simple guidelines, you can increase your creature comforts while still keeping you and your family safe. To avoid having to call for fire cleanup with a restoration company, choose a space heater that is safe and use it safely.

3 Parts To Check When a Commercial Toilet Keeps Running

4/22/2020 (Permalink)

Toilet overflowing onto the floor Commercial water damage is our specialty

Your Commerce City, commercial building’s toilets need to run efficiently for the comfort of your employees and customers. However, when a plumbing issue like a toilet overflow happens, it can be unpleasant for everyone. This problem may be caused by a variety of issues, but some can be fixed without the assistance of a plumber. If a toilet keeps running, there are several parts you can check before you call in a flood damage and cleanup service to ensure your bathrooms are properly dried and deodorized after an overflow.

1. The Gasket

Once you turn off the water, the first step to take is to open the winter flushometer. This is the part that causes a commercial toilet to flush efficiently. Use a screwdriver and a wrench to remove this unit’s lid. The gasket is usually located directly under the lid. If it contains a lot of debris or buildup, carefully remove and clean the gasket thoroughly.

2. The Weep Hole

A commercial toilet’s weep hole controls its suction, so when it gets clogged, this may affect water flow and cause a continuous flush. When you remove the toilet’s gasket, take a close look at this small hole. Clean it carefully with a slim tool and ensure all the sediment and other debris is cleared out. This may stop a toilet from flushing constantly and prevent a future toilet flood.

3. The Flange Cover

If this part is loose or corroded, it may be affecting the unit’s proper operation and contribute to a toilet overflow. Note how much water you find under the cover. If there is enough to run over when you remove it, there may be a leak in the gasket or the cover might be faulty, and one or both could need replacing.

When your Commerce City, commercial building experiences a toilet overflow, it can be embarrassing and unpleasant. However, you may be able to repair it by checking and cleaning a few important parts inside the unit to prevent future floods.
